Wow! Summer has flown by and the teachers and staff at Lichen are working
enthusiastically to get ready for THE RETURN OF THE STUDENTS!
The Lichen PTA is gearing up for the start of another great school year too! We
will be starting off the year right by sending home one of our most popular
fundraisers – the Gold C Coupon Book and the Entertainment Book. Your
student should bring one home the first week of school and we’ve got
opportunities for students to win prizes for their sales - including an I-Pod
Shuffle!
Our Vice Principal, Mrs. Fernandez, has been working hard over the summer on
plans for a School Garden at Lichen. She and I were honored to be among a
few people selected to view an amazing documentary highlighting the “Edible
Schoolyard” and how that organization helped revitalize two elementary
schools in Katrina-ravaged New Orleans. The benefit of a school garden for our
students is limitless. There is room for all kinds of parent participation, so keep
your eyes peeled for announcements about garden work!
The focus for this year’s PTA is parent involvement. We want to do everything
we can to help support your involvement with your Lichen student(s). We will
be asking parents and caregivers to take the “Three for Me Pledge” and pledge
to put in at least 3 hours of volunteer time before December 2009. Your time
can be here on campus, driving on a field trip, helping with a book fair or doing
take-home prep work for your teachers – the possibilities are endless! Studies
show that kids do better in school when their parents are involved.
And on that note – we’d like to invite you to be a member of the Lichen PTA.
Lichen PTA helps sponsor student and family activities, teacher appreciation,
Survivor Day, the Gotcha Store, Landscape for Lichen (grounds improvement),
Spirit Day, school T-shirts, 8th Grade Promotion Ceremonies, Pancakes with
Santa and many other great events at our school. We also help to provide a
voice for parents and pro-active representation to the San Juan Unified School
District. Membership is just $7.00 per year per person. Your membership
contribution helps to cover our insurance costs and contributes a small amount
to our administrative costs each year. Most of all, your involvement in PTA lets
the State PTA and the Board of Education know that Lichen has committed and
involved parents who care about their kids’ education! Please stop by the office
and pick up a membership envelope today!
Looking forward to seeing you at school!

PTA Membership - Now is the time to join PTA or renew your membership. Membership is $7.00 per person per year.
These fees go toward maintaining our non-profit status and our relationship with Council, District, State and National
PTA organizations, provides insurance for PTA events and allows for a modest amount to be set aside for our local PTA
administrative needs (postage, copies, etc.). Your biggest contribution to PTA is in your time and support for your
student and our school. Membership makes a difference!
